Big Whiskey And The GrooGrux King CD
Bonus CD (4 never before released tracks)
"Big Whiskey Documentary" DVD

24 page saddle-stitched booklet (Tribute to LeRoi Moore)
40 page perfect-bound photo book

Produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), Big Whiskey has been hailed by Rolling Stone as the group’s "heaviest album yet, both musically and emotionally," which went on to note: "Throughout, Carter Beauford beats out elaborate, propulsive groves; bassist Stefan Lessard lays down Flea-style funk bass lines; violinist Boyd Tinsley plays cresting, intense runs; and Matthews mirrors Moore’s saxophone lines with scatlike singing." Billboard, in a cover story on Dave Matthews Band, praised Big Whiskey as "its best album yet… Highlights include the funk-rock rave-up 'Shake Me Like a Monkey,' the stirring ballad 'Lying in the Hands of God,' the swampy rocker 'Alligator Pie (Cockadile),' radio-friendly fare like 'Why I Am,' which features playful horns over a solid rock riff and a hooky chorus, and 'Funny the Way It Is,' which parlays a subtle intro into a soaring, syncopated anthem."

DMB Live Trax Vol. 19: Vivo Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 9/30/08

DMB Live Trax Vol. 19: Vivo Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 9/30/08 Review

Dave Matthews Band performed at Vivo Rio in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on September 30, 2008 in front of many South American fans seeing the band live for the first time. The audience in Brazil was ecstatic which comes through in the recording and DMB really plays up to their exuberance. Highlights include Carlos Malta on the wood fife in "Say Goodbye," his influence bringing a distinct flavor and Brazilian sound. "Burning Down the House" followed by an arresting "Two Step" are also noteworthy as is an emotional "The Stone." The synergy between the band members is evident throughout the show. Other songs of the note on the Rio release are the show-opener, "Bartender" as well as "Grey Street" which makes its first official live release performed by the new formation of band members.

Amazon.com 10 Years of Music

Amazon.com 10 Years of Music Review

It’s hard to believe that 10 years have passed since Amazon Music opened its proverbial doors. In 1998, music fans pounded the streets with their Discmen, half the acts on this disc hadn’t released their first albums yet, and record stores ruled the retail music game. But in the past decade, music has undergone huge changes.

To thank the millions of customers, artists, businesspeople, and fans who have helped make this possible, we present our 10th Anniversary compilation. The musicians herein represent some of the bestsellers among the Amazon community since 1998. Without knowing it, then, you nominated them for this musical testament to the past 10 years. They accepted, and they join us in celebrating the GRAMMY Foundation’s MusiCares program, which works tirelessly for the health and welfare of musicians nationwide.

So on behalf of all of us at Amazon Music, thank you for helping us achieve the dream of the best music store on the planet. And brace yourselves: we're almost a teenager.

Guiding Star

Guiding Star Review

One of the hardest things to learn as a musician is not only to recognize inspiration, but when to trust and follow it. Over a musically and so-cially consequential career, South African singer-songwriter and poet-activist Vusi Mahlasela has successfully followed his muse. That trust in his gift is at the root of his latest album, Guiding Star. Mahlasela wrote and recorded this album as he toured the globe. Bearing the influences of various music and voices from throughout the world, Guiding Star features guest appearances from Dave Matthews (Sower of Words), band leader and Allman Brothers guitarist Derek Trucks (Tib-idi Waka), Australian didgeridoo star Xavier Rudd (Chamber of Justice), singer-songwriter Jem (Everytime) and longtime friends and touring mates Ladysmith Black Mambazo (Heaven In My Heart"). Mahlasela also drew on the talents of numerous South African guests, including the leg-endary Black Moses Ngwenya of the Soul Brothers, the children's choir from the Agnes Chidi School in his home Township, Mamelodi, and the KCC Gospel, among many others. Born Vusi Sidney Mahlasela Ka Zwane in 1965 in Lady Selborne, South Africa, Mahlasela became enchanted by music at an early age, building his first guitar out of tin and fishing line. Reared in Mamelodi Township, a vibrant artist community where he still resides, he gravitated toward poetry and songwriting as a teen, eventually joining youth organizations protesting South Africa's separatist, white government. After the end of Apartheid, Vusi performed at Nelson Mandela's inaugura-tion in 1994, and is now an ambassador to Mandela's 46664 Foundation, a campaign to help raise Global awareness of Aids/ HIV. Having released a string of albums in South Africa, it wasn't until the debut in 2003 of the documentary film Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony, a film that charts South Africans' longtime struggle for racial equality, that Americans first glimpsed and heard Mahlasela. Later that year, Ameri-cans did, with The Voice, a collection of the best songs from his catalog, all released for the first time in U.S. via the ATO Records label (co-owned by longtime fan and fellow South African Dave Matthews, who calls Mahlasela one of the most important influences of my life.).A single listen to Guiding Star, is all one needs to be assured that Mahlasela is a gifted performer. And with that gift comes responsibility, says Vusi: I know that I have something that is like a borrowed fire from God. And I have to use it in a very positive way.

Songs for Tibet - The Art of Peace (2 CD Set)

Songs for Tibet - The Art of Peace (2 CD Set) Review

Two CD set. Songs for Tibet - The Art of Peace Music Project. Proceeds that the Art Of Peace Foundation receives goes to peace related projects. As a show of solidarity with the Dalai Lama and Tibet, 20 artists have come together to release this historic double album on the eve of the Beijing Olympics. These recordings - some original for the project and some acoustically driven recordings of previously released songs - express our common vulnerabilities and experiences in pursuing happiness, peace and freedom. Collectively, these tracks represent a heartfelt message of support for the path of compassion and non-violence championed by the Dalai Lama. Begun in May of 2008 and completed in two months, the outpouring of support from all corners of the world was unparalleled. Funds raised from the album will go to support peace initiatives and Tibetan cultural preservation projects important to the Dalai Lama.

Live at Folsom Field - Boulder, Colorado

Live at Folsom Field - Boulder, Colorado Review

The fortunes of the Dave Matthews Band have been so tied to its legendary live performances that it's arguably led to some well-documented searches for direction in the studio. The success of Everyday was hard won, its originally rejected material eventually revived, reworked, and released a year later as Busted Stuff. But those creative struggles have paid double dividends here, arguably pushing Matthews and company to a compelling new plateau on stage. Recorded in Boulder, Colorado, on July, 11, 2001, fully half of this two and a half-hour show is culled from the results of those stormy sessions, including brooding versions of Busted's then-unreleased "Bartender" and "Digging a Ditch." But it's the wider, more challenging musical palette of Everyday that takes center stage, stretching from the lyrical, cinematic drama of "The Space Between" and "What You Are" to the smoky, blues-jazz tinged "Angel" and loping funk of "When the World Ends." That sense of adventure helps reinvigorate even Matthews staples like "Crash into Me" and "What Would You Say" with new musical dimensions and helps make this collection more than just the band's sixth live album. It sounds like the beginning of a promising new chapter. --Jerry McCulley

Listener Supported

Listener Supported Review

If you're of the opinion that the Grateful Dead comparisons that dog the Dave Matthews Band ring false, consider that with the release of Listener Supported, Matthews has put out more live albums (four, if you count Live at Luther College, a duet album with Tim Reynolds) than studio efforts (three, if you don't count the Recently EP). That's a lot of live albums, but Matthews fans probably wouldn't have it any other way. Now it's more possible than ever to haggle over which version of, say, "Warehouse"--which appears on Live at Red Rocks, Luther College, and the new album, as well as on Recently and Under the Table and Dreaming--is definitive. But "Warehouse" aside, the Matthews Band isn't making the same album over and over. Listener Supported contains a nice mix of tunes, albeit with a fair emphasis on their most recent studio effort, Before These Crowded Streets. Among the highlights is a funky, freewheeling take on "Rapunzel," and gorgeous readings of "#41," and the traditional country tune "Long Black Veil." With over two and a half hours of music, the album is enough to sate most DMB fans, at least until the next live album turns up. --Daniel Durchholz
